Chinooks Before Contact with Europeans

Before white man made contact with the Chinook tribe there way of life was different. They were one of the most powerful tribes on the west coast. They traded their fish for things they needed, and controlled a big part of southern western Washington. They used canoes to fish, and travel to other Tribes by water to trade. Most men in the tribe didn’t wear cloths while warm, and women wore short bark or grass shirts. They wore basket hats. Several families shared the same house, which were long houses. The Chinooks had told stories of Sasquatch being around before white man. Potlatches were a very important part of their lives. They shared their wealth with each other during these events. Individuals had a spirit quest where they would go out into the woods alone until they had a vision. Some people didn’t make it back alive. In spring they had a first salmon celebration. The Chinook Tribe was a powerful Tribe from their trading skills.

  1. I have not read anywhere about yet about Sasquatch stories, but I have heard them from a view different tribal members. I know a view of the members have been on Bob Sagest show, finding Sasquatch. I am a believer that there really is a Sasquatch out there!

    1. the sklallam have three traditional words in our dictionary for sasquatch. One is for the young one, the other word is a family term and the other a large male.

  2. Hi Clint! Thanks for all of your info. It’s interesting to hear about the Chinook’s tribe role in the area. They sound like a very powerful tribe and I am sure it took years to develop the thriving trading system and boat system they developed!
